HBO Renews ‘Euphoria’ for a Second Season
Get ready to grab your tissues and snacks because season two of Euphoria will finally be happening. Euphoria first aired in the summer of 2019. Although no official date is set for the release of the second season, the series started production and is expected to release in late 2021 or early 2022.
After the lead actress, Zendaya dazzled the 72nd Emmy Awards with her win for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her drug addict teen character, Rue Bennet, HBO shortly announced the arrival of season two’s production.
Due to COVID-19, Euphoria had become delayed with the production of season two. HBO Max announced that filming will begin in 2021 during the earlier part of the year.
According to the casting website, Backstage, filming began on April 5 in Los Angeles, California.
Euphoria tells the stories of teenagers living through the distress, anguish, and heartbreak of being 21-century teens. This series focuses each episode on separate characters as well as telling the overall hardships. Action-packed and emotionally filled with teenage romance, drama, and portrayals of trauma, this new age drama gives a sip of reality on the struggles of being a teenager during the age of social media.
The main cast includes Zendaya, Hunter Schaffer, Sydney Sweeney, Maude Apatow, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreria, Alexa Demie, Storm Reid, and many others.
Sydney Sweeney who plays, Cassie Howard, a teenager struggling with sexual relationships as she tries to find herself emotionally, posted a cute video on Instagram saying, “she’s backkk.” This appears to be a reference to filming starting.
Although no dates for production were formally released, cast members, including Zendaya, and Sweeney aimed for their fans to believe season two filming had begun.
On April 6, Zendaya posted an Instagram story with the caption “Home Sweet Home” while appearing to wear Rue’s iconic converse. Castmate Sweeny also posted an Instagram story of “Season 2” with glitter-filled letters. The posts got fans excited as they expressed their excitement to Twitter.

Despite the green light on the second season, before season one finished airing in summer 2019, there have been no details released. As COVID-19 delayed the production process, HBO Max released a two-part special with one episode based on Rue Bennet (Zendaya) and one episode based on Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schaffer).
“Euphoria Special Episode Part 1: Rue” features the aftermath of Rue’s relapse after Jules left her at a train station. As Rue continues with her struggles of losing Jules and continuous relapse, the Christmas season draws nearer.
“Euphoria Special Episode Part 2: Jules” reflects on Jules’ trauma as she leaves her year behind. During the Christmas season, she settles on aiding herself with therapy, though reluctant to share.
“Euphoria creator Sam Levinson has built an incredible world with an extraordinary cast led by the supremely talented Zendaya,” Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming, stated to EW about season two.
Season two will build on the undertows and currents that are the ocean of teenage reality. By creating a fold into the messy and troubling lives of teenagers, Euphoria plans to give an explosive new season.
Even with the delays and unknown release dates, we are excited to see the stories of these teenagers will be revealed. To get the latest updates on the release of the second season be sure to follow the official Twitter account for Euphoria.
