Naomi Ackie has been selected to be the leading lady in I Wanna Dance With Somebody, a biopic about the life of the iconic singer Whitney Houston.

Finding an actress who could take on such an iconic role and truly embody the presence of Houston was a difficult task that took a big chunk of last year. Ackie is known for her role as Jannah in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

With Stella Meghie, who directed Everything, Everything, and The Photographer, as the director to Anthony McCarten, who wrote Bohemian Rhapsody, as the writer for yet another biopic this project is going to uncover the truth in a visual art form. While Houston appealed to the ears, this movie will appeal to the eyes. However, both will appeal to the heart.

On behalf of the Houston estate Pat Houston, Houston’s sister-in-law, will be a producer, along with Clive Davis, Houston’s music producer, McCarten, and Larry Mestel, another partner of the Houston estate. Since this movie is going to be produced by people who knew Houston well, this ensures the validity of the movie along with her presence and spirit through the people she was close with.

“Naomi Ackie’s screen test was so powerful, it sent shivers up my spine,” Davis told Hollywood Reporter. “Although Whitney’s incomparable vocals are used for all the songs, Naomi’s extraordinary acting range enables her to masterfully capture Whitney’s unique charm, star power, and, of course, her personal struggles. Naomi is the real deal and I can’t imagine a better choice for this iconic role.”

I Wanna Dance With Somebody is set to be released on Thanksgiving 2022, but the final product will be worth the wait.
