The talented Tracee Ellis Ross gave an empowering speech discussing the power of fashion in her acceptance for the “Fashion Icon” award at the 2020 People’s Choice Awards.

Tracee Ellis Ross has had a major impact on pop-culture. Daughter of the famous 70’s singer, Diana Ross, she has been in the limelight since her early days. Ross started her career as a model, making her a well-known figure in the fashion industry. She is most well known for her lead roles in hit T.V. shows Girlfriends and Black-ish. Additionally, she has her own curly hair product line, Pattern Beauty.

Ross received the “Fashion Icon” award at the 2020 People’s Choice Awards. She started her speech with, ““Tracee, do you take fashion to be your lawfully wedded wife? I do… Thank you for validating my shopping habit.”

She went on to thank the fashion designers and brands she has worked with throughout her career. She also gave a heartfelt shout-out to her mom, the iconic Diana Ross. Ross stated, “Obviously, I have to thank the icon herself, my mom. Not only for her great parenting and not acquiescing to my many whimsical and outrageous requests and tantrums … but also her style, her epic closet, and glamour that introduced me to the power of fashion.”

She concluded her speech with the following, “Use fashion as an entrance. Let your clothes be your superhero cape, allowing you to the best you you can be. It doesn’t matter if you wear a black tie or a Black Lives Matter T-shirt, but suit up and show up, because our action creates our destiny, our joy creates space for our freedom.”
