The Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai, hosted a zoom call with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to discuss the importance of girls’ education since it has been impacted severely by the COVID-19 crisis.

The discussion centered around both Yousafzai’s and Markle’s work for feminism and girls’ education as they have both championed different organizations under that umbrella. They opened by reflecting on their own experiences of education when they were children. Markle thanks the opportunities she was given to have access to education when she was a young girl through university. Prince Harry emphasized the need for every child to have an education, highlighting the fact that currently, 130 million girls are without education due to coronavirus. The couple recognizes the immense damage this could cause to society later on which is why they want to focus on this problem now.

Yousafzai turned the conversation to Prince Harry when she asked him about the relation between climate change and girls’ education. He responded, “The importance of girls education to help defer climate change is absolutely critical.” He goes on to state that many problems society faces are all intertwined and when you work on one, you are improving other problems at the same time.

One of the most worrisome facts brought up between the trio was that of 20 million girls at risk of dropping out of school completely due to COVID-19 who will probably never return to an academic setting. Markle argues that “What you [Malala] say is so important for people to remember because it’s not just robbing society of the cultural richness that comes from educating young girls and allowing them the opportunity to develop into strong, educated women. It’s also robbing these young girls of a childhood.”

The Malala Fund is currently working on bringing education to girls who need it most in different countries. The organization promotes working at the local level with educators to focus on the problems that each individual community is facing to therefore give their students the best possible education.
