In honor of the long-awaited debut, Stephen Colbert was joined by the cast for an exclusive conversation. During the cast Q&A, Chalamet spoke about his portrayal of the film’s lead Paul Atreides.

“Paul Atreides is a young man who is facing extraordinary circumstances and extraordinary struggles trying to navigate it with integrity and honor,” Chalamet said. “Paul sees that there is potential that he is on a path greater than he understood, that perhaps he’s not a regular man.”

Director Denis Villeneuve, best known for his work on Arrival, revealed the reason he ultimately chose Chalamet for the role. “I have the impression when I talk to Timothée that he lives many lives, and it is something that really touched me,” Villeneuve said. “At the same time, he looks so young on camera.”

The first trailer for the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel gave fans a glimpse of the Dune characters brought to life by this star-studded lineup. Chalamet and Zendaya will be joined by Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, Oscar Isaac, and Stellan Skarsgård.

Dune was originally adapted in David Lynch’s 1984 movie starring Kyle MacLachlan, and Villeneuve told Entertainment Weekly what his take on the popular novel will look like.

“You’re using your own sensibility and childhood dreams, while also making sure to stay in the realm of the common dream of everybody,” Villeneuve said.

Fans took to Twitter to share their first reactions to the trailer and their excitement for Villeneuve’s vision for the project.

Dune is set to release on December 19 nationwide. You can listen to Stephen Colbert’s full Q&A with the cast here.
