On August 6, 2020, Doja Cat surprised her audience by premiering a new track, “Freak,” on YouTube.

However, before releasing “Freak” on YouTube, the artist tweeted that “Freak” is not the only surprise she’s been keeping from her fans. The singer of the iconic “Say So” and “Boss B*tch” songs may appear to be risqué and indulgent in “Freak” at first, yet Doja Cat attempts to celebrate sexuality, romance, and the freedom to love openly.

The instrumentals for “Freak” come from Paul Anka’s famous 1959 hit, “Put Your Head On My Shoulder.” Doja Cat First released “Freak” to SoundCloud in 2018. A day after its recent release in 2020, “Freak” gained near 1 million views and 100,000 likes on YouTube. Doja Cat sings, “You want a good girl that does bad things to you,” and she continues, “Spice up your life, come get a freak.

“Freak” celebrates sexual liberation and asserts that female sexuality should not be taboo, but instead respected and acknowledged. On Twitter, Some of Doja Cat’s fans voiced their concern with the lack of promotion of “Freak.” While the audience was valid to announce their care and wanted to see “Freak” top the charts, Doja Cat quickly reminded them about priorities. The singer focuses on the quality of music, not promotion.
