Bastille Released a New Song, ‘What You Gonna Do???’

Capitol Records

On July 30, 2020, Bastille released their newest track, “What You Gonna Do???”

Formed in 2010, Bastille is an English indie pop music band. It consists of four members, Dan Smith, Will Farquarson, Chris Wood, and Kyle Simmons. In 2013, Bastille made its musical debut with their song “Pompeii,” which has gained over 500 million views and 3.4 million likes on YouTube. In 2018, Bastille also collaborated with Marshmello on “Happier,” which accumulated over 1 billion streams on Spotify.

“What You Gonna Do???” is quite unlike any other of Bastille’s songs because it deviates from their traditional style of pop and indie and steps into rock. The song is only 2 minutes and 22 seconds long and centers around themes of inner mental chaos, the true definition of happiness, and escapism.

The animated music video, directed by Reza Dolatabadi, transports its viewers into a chaotic world of parallel universes and the human mind. It examines social media addiction, and the many facades people install in fear of genuine human connections. The track is dynamic, and while the graphics are visually appealing and keep the audience on their toes, they contain existentialist motifs. Smith sings, “Make me paranoid / Love me, hate me, fill the void / What you gonna do with it?” He continues, “Sally’s never outside / Got a screen to hide behind / She says she’s happy on the inside / And got a lot of friends online.”
