Grammy-winning music video director, Melina Matsoukas’ directorial debut is one of the most anticipated films of this year. The film premiered at the 2019 AFI Fest on Thursday night. Not only did the stars look fabulous, but they were also there to promote a very important message: The brutality of police violence.

Written by Emmy winner, Lena Waithe and starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith, Queen & Slim, follows a young black couple on the run after they kill a cop in the act of self-defense. Lena Waithe is pictured below accepting her award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series at the 69th Emmy Awards.

Waithe posted a photo to her Instagram, from the film, on Nov. 5, of two women together in the dark doing their hair. The image is vulnerable and deep showing just how personal this simple act can be. Her caption is even more chilling and powerful saying, “Who are you close to? @queenandslim

The cover image shows a car on fire surrounded by still people watching. The film’s vulnerability and realism are said to bring important issues to light in a brilliant depiction of injustice.

Verified Instagram account, @blackthought, comments on one of Lena Waithe’s photos after the premiere saying, “Film was BREATHTAKING beyond measure. Poetic. Moving. Disturbing. Inspiring. Just wow.”

Queen & Slim opens in theaters on Nov. 27, make sure to buy your tickets here.
