3 Tips To Protect Your Natural Hair This Summer

Summer has taken full effect and its time to have fun in the sun.

But that fun can’t happen if you’re constantly worrying about how your natural hair is being affected. Here are 3 hair care tips to protect natural hair this summer.

1. Keep Your Hair Out of the Sun: I know I know, this sounds nearly impossible and a bit excessive but sunlight can be very damaging to all hair types due to harmful UV rays. Direct sunlight can alter the color of your hair and/or cause your scalp to become sunburnt. You can prevent sun damage easily by sporting a cute dad hat or rocking a headscarf during the day.

2. Moisturize: Natural hair is not always easy to maintain, especially when the weather includes heat and humidity. These elements can cause your curls, coils, and waves to dry out. An easy way to prevent your hair from drying out while you’re enjoying your beach days is to moisturize, Moisturize, MOISTURIZE. Using a moisturizer such as a leave-in conditioner is key. But make sure the products you’re applying are not too heavy as this can cause gross product build up that will have your twist out looking dusty. Prevent hair damage from water fun by coating your hair with a thin layer of leave-in or oil before getting into a pool or the ocean to prevent your hair from absorbing harmful chlorine or saltwater. This method can be applied to protective styles as well.

3. Protective Styles: Consider protective styles to be the easiest, most convenient method of protecting your natural hair this summer. Protection is literally in the name! Protective styles are designed to hide your natural hair from all elements and to protect your hair from any damage that may occur in everyday life all while looking like a queen. Box braids, Faux Locs, Ponytails, Fulani Braids, Crochet Braids, Havana Twists, Senegalese Twists, Wigs…should I keep going? These styles are super fun to rock and are definitely a way to switch up your look while keeping your hair healthy.
