AUTHOR CRUSH FRIDAY: MARIE LU
Glitter girls, you have pressing questions for your favorite authors and we have their answers. Welcome to our weekly segment, Author Crush Fridays.
We love asking questions and we love the answers from some of our favorite authors. Today we’re talking to Marie Lu, author of The Young Elites (Oct. 7, 2014; Putnam Juvenile). Thank you for talking to us today, Marie! We’re honored!
GLITTER: How would you describe The Young Elites to a new reader?
MARIE: The Young Elites is about a girl who is essentially the teen female version of Darth Vader, and her journey to becoming a villain.
GLITTER: Some people call The Young Elites Assassin’s Creed meets X-Men. Do you agree with that comparison?
MARIE: Yes, I think so! Assassin’s Creed definitely had some influence on me for this story, and the Young Elites’ powers could go head to head with the X-Men.
GLITTER: Is it true that you wanted to write a teenage girl version of Darth Vader? If so, why? What do you hope readers will get out of The Young Elites?
MARIE: Yes, I was very interested in writing from the point of view of someone who will eventually be seen as a villain. Everyone always thinks they are the hero of her own story, so I wanted to see what it was like to tell a story from that angle. I hope readers will enjoy that viewpoint, too, and still root for Adelina even as they disapprove of some of her actions.
GLITTER: Does The Young Elites appeal to everyone?
MARIE: The Young Elites hopefully appeals to anyone who enjoys morally gray characters.
GLITTER: Will we see your books on the big screen soon?
MARIE: Hollywood is never 100% certain, but Legend is optioned for film, so my fingers are crossed!
GLITTER: What is the longest a fan has ever waited at a tour event to meet you?
MARIE: I had a signing in Manila, Philippines, where an enthusiastic young fan lined up almost two days in advance!
GLITTER: What are you working on right now?
MARIE: Right now, I’m working on the sequel to The Young Elites. It’s in first draft mode. Wish me luck!
