Raveena Aurora Is Winning Hearts and Ears with Her Own R&B Genre

Instagram

If you aren’t already in the know, you need to know Raveena Aurora. There is something about her vocals that will remind you of classical jazz but her style is a mashup that she recently told National Public Radio she feels is her “life’s work.”

Raveena’s lyrics touch on topics reminiscent of Rupi Kaur’s poetry; they are sometimes simple but leave room for soulful interpretations of the words themselves. Inspired in part by Bollywood, in part by vocal icons such as Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald, Raveena’s music explores the combination of classic R&B and traditions of the South Asian diaspora.

The singer songwriter from New York and Connecticut was raised by Sikh practicing parents from North India. Her debut album came out in 2018 and she used the song “Temptation” to come out to her family, friends, and fans, as bisexual. India has been going through its own societal conversations about LGBTQ rights in the recent years, so Raveena’s presence and music has been making an impact there as well as in the West.

Raveena also just announced that she is going on tour and tickets will be available on Friday.
