The 73rd Annual Tony Awards Is Live

The Pride-themed 73rd Tony Awards were held this past Sunday, June 9. The host this year was the hilarious, charming and talented James Corden from the Late Late Show on CBS. He opened the show with a musical number about the perks of going to a Broadway show. Corden sang about how Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Hulu can only entertain a person so much while going to a Broadway show is not only entertaining but an experience within itself.

The late-night talk show host got to showcase his vocals in the opening number while singing about how a live show is so much better than watching through a TV or laptop screen. In a live show, the cast pauses for your claps and laughs instead of you laughing through the lines of others. The audience is in the room with the characters they are watching. It is different to watch the actors live in front of you instead of on an edited filmed show. Each show is unique. Not one show is like the other. When a show is live not everything is going to be exactly the same which means that experience is just for that audience.

The Tony Awards gives us a glimpse of the shows on Broadway this season. It also shows those who can’t make it to a live show what it’s like to go to one. When watching a live performance anything can happen. Watching cable, Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime is entertaining but there is just something special about Broadway that those outlets cannot create. This show honors those who give a live experience every night for others to enjoy.
