Miley Cyrus held back tears during a beautiful tribute to remember the late Janice Freeman.

Janice, a former The Voice contestant who competed on Miley’s team on season 13, passed away on March 2 from “an extreme case of pneumonia and a blood clot at 33 years old. Following the news of Janice’s passing Miley mourned her friend in a series of Instagram posts accompanied by touching captions.

Cyrus sang at Freeman’s memorial service on Monday in Irvine, CA. During the service which was live streamed on Facebook, the 26- year-old singer sang a bluesy version of “Amazing Grace” with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. Before the tribute, Miley said, “Before we sing this song for Janice, I just want to clear up a rumor. I was never her coach. Ever. She was always mine, I learned more from her than anyone that I’ve ever gotten the honor to be in the room with, not just vocally. I should’ve gotten more lessons than I did, but she taught me everything that I know about love.”

Janice Freeman is survived by her husband Dion, daughter Hannah, mother Janice, and brothers and sisters.
