Stephen + Ayesha Curry Are Creating a Scholarship Fund for Girls with Stem Interests

Instagram

It all started with a 9-year old dreamer…

Last year Stephen Curry revealed that he received a letter from a 9-year old fan named Riley who wondered why his sneaker collaboration with Under Armour did not come in girls sizes. After reaching out to Riley about her letter, Curry revealed that he has now collaborated with Riley to design the new Curry 6 sneakers. Riley’s design can be found on the inner sole of the Warriors signature shoe.

Instead of profiting the money from the sneaker sales, Curry and his wife Ayesha have decided to create a scholarship program through the Stephen & Ayesha Curry Family Foundation for young women that have interests in STEM careers. The annual scholarship will be received by a female student (with a 3.0 GPA or higher) in the Bay Area of California to be used in funding their college education. The scholarship comes in the form of $30,000 that will be distributed to the recipient over a two-year span.

The scholarship has already been awarded to a girl named Vivan Wu, a student with crazy community service hours and who is an advocate for marginalized communities and survivors of domestic violence.

More and more foundations/celebrities are pushing young women into the STEM field, a male-dominated industry. This scholarship is just another way to let young women know that they can be anything. What a great way to begin Women’s History Month.
