Motown Fans Were Not Happy with JLo’s Tribute Performance at the Grammys
Grammy viewers are not happy with the Recording Academy or Jennifer Lopez. Every year the Recording Academy receives criticism from viewers based on their choices for award winners, but this year the Academy’s decision to ask Jennifer Lopez is the source of viewer displeasure. Lopez clearly put a lot of time and energy into preparing for her performance at this year’s Grammys. The singer paired a variety of Motown hits like “Dancing in the Street” and “Please Mr. Postman” with energetic choreography and beautiful costumes.

On the surface, it seems as though the performance should have been a hit. However, Lopez’s hard work was not the center of attention this year; many viewers were upset that the Grammys did not find a female African American to sing the soulful songs that were originally sung by black artists, giving Motown its rise to fame.

Despite displeasure from fans and viewers, Smokey Robinson has come to Jennifer’s defense, telling Variety, “I don’t think anyone who is intelligent is upset, Motown was music for everybody. Everybody.”
