Danielle Brooks is starting off Black History Month the right way with this powerful new track.

Known for her role as “Taystee” on the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black, Danielle is walking a new path into music. Her journey into music is no surprise as Brooks has played several roles where her musical talents were showcased, much like her role as Sophia in the 2015 revival of The Color Purple on Broadway. Danielle’s single titled “Black Woman” is as powerful as it is inspirational.

Her fans have been anticipating the release of the single as Danielle has been teasing its release for weeks on her social media platforms.

The song’s interior highlights the importance of loving one’s self as a black woman despite the many struggles being faced. She sings about being “thick”, and the effects of cultural appropriation: “You want my thighs you want my stride but not this melanin. You want my hair but you don’t care for my complexion.”

“Black Woman” has a very jazzy sound and you can feel the passion in Danielle’s voice as she sings her truth and the truth of many others. The lyrics inform black women that they are not alone and that they should love who they are, providing a sense of community. Danielle has stated that this is her first single. Many are speculating that she may be releasing an album and this is the first single from that project. If this is true and the albsher fans have loads of uplifting tracks to look forward to.
