Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg take the stage this year for the Golden Globe Awards show.

On a night known for movie shout-outs, celebrity roasts and celebrated artists, the show starts off with a monologue from an unexpected duo. Sandra Oh, the Grey’s Anatomy star, and Andy Samberg, known for his foolish humor, kick off the night with a different style of monologue. Instead of jokingly poking fun at the VIPs or at the world, they decided to jest in a more endearing way. What they chose to do was “mock” but in a way that paid extreme compliments to the people they were talking about. Most viewers weren’t used to the way they broke tradition but loved how heartwarming it made everyone feel.

This kind of lovable humor was surely a great compliment to a night that changed Golden Globe history. Sandra Oh contributed to a momentous change herself, as she became the first woman of Asian American descent to host the Golden Globe Awards. Watch as she makes a speech acknowledging the defining moment for the development of the film industry’s diversity.

She tears up as she describes, “I said yes to the fear of being on this stage tonight because I wanted to be here to look out into this audience and witness this moment of change. Right now, this moment is real. Trust me, it is real. Because I see you and I see you — all of these faces of change — and now so will everyone else.”

She continues to make history as she also became the first Asian American woman to receive multiple Golden Globes.
