Katy Perry Covers ‘Waving Through a Window’
The singer opens up about her own battle with depression in this stunning cover.
Katy Perry recorded a special cover of “Waving Through a Window” from Dear Evan Hansen for the release of the hit musical’s deluxe cast recording. More than a simple cover, however, this song about mental illness holds a special place in the singer’s heart.
In a powerful Instagram post, Perry recalls her experience watching the musical and how it touched her at a particularly difficult point in her life. She mentions her personal battle with mental health issues and her struggle to feel a sense of belonging.

On April 29, 2017, I went and saw Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway, and was emotionally transformed forever. In my own life, I’ve struggled with depression, and like so many, always feeling alone in the battle of wanting to belong. That night, I was particularly struck by the song “Waving Through A Window.” It embodied the mental isolation I sometimes fought. So when my friends @benjpasek and @justinpaulmusic came to me and asked if I would like to re-record this song, not only to help launch the national tour, but to continue the conversation on mental health and all its complexities, I jumped right in. I hope this song helps you know that you are not alone, and that I’m waving back at you. The deluxe cast recording’s release coincided with the launch of the Dear Evan Hansen national tour, which opened in Los Angeles last week. Perry attended the premiere, along with other stars including Chrissy Metz and Maya Rudolph.
Dear Evan Hansen sends a message of hope to those struggling with mental illness, so its transition into mainstream culture through popular artists is significant. This breakthrough holds the potential to start meaningful conversations about mental health.
