ABC/Mitch Haaseth

How to Get Away with Murder returned for its fifth season Thursday night, and it went down for the Middleton University law students.

Ever since the season 5 trailer dropped, we have been anticipating the all-new season of How to Get Away with Murder. The season 4 finale left us baffled, and we have been waiting for answers ever since.

Throughout the episode, we were getting season 1 flashbacks. Annalise (Viola Davis) is back in the classroom after winning the Supreme Court Case. It was a major reminder of season 1 because the law students are dying to be in Annalise’s Advanced Trial Skills class, but it comes down to whether they are worthy or not. The students have to show their passion for the issue they are arguing for in the trial. In the end, Annalise chooses 24 students and Asher (Matt McGorry) is left behind.

A new face has entered the new season and we are introduced to an ambitious student, Gabriel (Rome Flynn). It seems that Gabriel may have some connection to Annalise. Annalise is very impressed by Gabriel and she lets him join her Clinic. Some people are theorizing that he may be her son, but with a show like HTGAWM, it is never that simple.

Following their usual tradition, the last few minutes had us holding our breath. There is a flash forward of someone bleeding in the snow, and it looks like Laurel’s (Karla Souza) son is on the ground crying. Ultimately, what took us out was when Bonnie (Liza Weil) chokes the person who is dying.

We cannot wait to see what season 5 has in store for us.
