Warner Bros. has recently announced that the upcoming film set in the DC Extended Universe Birds of Prey will be released on February 7th, 2020.

Margot Robbie, who had gained massive traction when she played the anti-hero Harley Quinn in the 2014 film Suicide Squad, is set to return to the DCEU and star in Birds of Prey as Harley Quinn. Cathy Yan, who had directed and written the film Dead Pigs, was selected to direct the film.

In the original DC comic books, the Birds of Prey were a team of crime-fighting, female superheroes with the main trio of members including Oracle/Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance), and Huntress (Helena Bertinelli). Barbara would lead Dinah and Helena on missions from a stationary standpoint behind the scenes through their headquarters while Dinah and Helena would carry out the physical crime-fighting work.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. had been searching for actresses, more specifically women of color, to play the iconic members of the Birds of Prey – Black Canary and Huntress.

A few actresses said to have been tested for Black Canary included Gugu Mbatha-Raw, known for films such as Belle and Disney’s 2017 live adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, and Jurnee Smolett-Bell, who was known for playing Rosalee in WGN’s Underground.

The actresses “Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield LaneFargo) and Cristin Milioti (Black MirrorHow I Met Your Mother) have tested or read” for the role of Huntress according to The Hollywood Reporter.

We cannot wait until this one hits theaters in 2020.
