Disney Announces ‘High School Musical’ TV Series

 DISNEY CHANNEL/ BOB D’AMICO

Disney reveals the upcoming production of a television series based on the iconic High School Musical film franchise.

If you were a kid growing up in the mid-2000s, High School Musical was probably one of your favorite movies.

The Disney film quickly became an international phenomenon following its 2006 debut, which sparked the release of two additional movies, High School Musical 2 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year.

Disney announced last week that they will continue to honor the franchise’s legacy with a new television show, High School Musical: The Musical. The 10-episode series follows a group of high school students staging a production of High School Musical, and highlights all of the drama that occurs along the way.

Fans of the original High School Musical movies have given mixed reactions to the news. Most seem to be slightly disappointed that none of the original cast members will return for the new show:

Even Bart Johnson, who portrayed Coach Bolton in the films, voiced his feelings about the announcement to his Instagram followers. He’s still trying his best to make an HSM reunion happen someday:

BREAKING NEWS for all my Wildcats 🏀🐾 it’s official. Disney has released the plot for the 2019 HSM tv series and the first round of characters they will be casting. Looks like Disney has no interest in bringing back OG cast. Not sure the fans are gonna be happy about that and I KNOW coach ain’t happy about that!!!! They DID being on some top talent to write and produce this thing with Oliver Goldstick & Tim Federline. (Also written by Tim). Let me know what you guys think!! #hsm #hsm2 #hsm3 and now #hsmtvseries #highschoolmusical you guys know I’ve been tryin my best to bring the OG cast for #4 for the past 10 years and I’m still not giving up. Honestly I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to populate EVERY version of HSM with as many familiar faces / OG cast as humanly possible. 🏀🐾🏀🐾🏀🐾🏀🐾🏀🐾🏀🐾🏀🐾 Okay just had a thought… I’m gonna host a screening for this show when it premiere and it’s gonna be an open guest list for all y’all. Promise. We can cry together if it’s terrible and celebrate together if it’s magic!! 🏀🐾🏀🐾🏀🐾🏀🐾🏀🐾🏀 okay I had yet ANOTHER thought…. this version ISNT trying to be #4 or even a reboot!! This is where I think Tim the writer is being brilliant. This can live completely on its OWN, while at the same time letting everyone, including this new cast, go for a ride down memory lane and pay tribute the the original classics!!! This isn’t messing up the franchise and it’s not making it impossible to make a continuation happen of the original in the future. This might just work and be something brilliant and beautiful… since it’s being handled by GREAT writers and producers it might just work…. as long as the coach is in it somehow of course. NOW… can you guys all please do me a solid and tag 3 frinds or whatever and spread the word?? I need to hit 100k followers so Disney will actually listen to me!! THANSK!!! ❤️👍 LOVE YOU ALL!!!❤️ lowkey mixed feelings from coach.
