Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, James Corden and Ian McKellen have been cast in the Universal movie version of the Broadway musical “Cats.”

The original play is based on the “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats,” published in 1939. The collection of poems about the “Jellicle cats” will be the basis of the film. The Broadway show was first performed in 1981 and is the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history.

Jennifer Hudson, singer, actress, and winner of American Idol had her big break in the movie Dreamgirls. Hudson will be playing the main character, Grizabella, a former “glamour cat” who loses everything she owns and is shunned by the rest of the feline community. Grizabella sings the famous Broadway song  ‘Memory’ which Hudson will also be signing.

Swift will be playing Bombalurina, a flirtatious red cat, and McKellan will play Old Deuteronomy, the elderly Jellicle leader. Oscar award-winning director, Tom Hooper is directing the film. Filming is starting in Britain this coming November.
