Lykke Li Releases New Album ‘So Sad So Sexy’

The Swedish indie-pop icon just dropped her first album in four years, and it’s both aptly named and worth the wait.

Perhaps you know her from her 2014 duet with A$AP Rocky, a remix of “No Rest For The Wicked” off her album I Never Learn–released that same year–or from the soundtrack of The Fault in Our Stars (2014), for which she specifically wrote, “No One Ever Loved.”

If you’ve followed the Nordic songstress for a while longer, you’d know of her 2008 debut album Youth Novels, which included the three tracks from her pre-released EP Little Bit. You may also have tabs on the fact that multiple records of hers have landed on annual “best albums” lists like those of Pitchfork, Complex, Rolling Stone, Billboard and even more along the way.

Whether you recognize her from these specific endeavors or not, you’ll never forget her after you listen to her latest work. So Sad So Sexy is an unprecedented 10-track experience that cannot be confined to just one genre quite as easily as her previous albums.

The 32-year-old vocalist has been through quite a bit in the time that’s passed since I Never Learn, including the birth of her son, the loss of her mother, and her move from Sweden to LA. All of this has somehow culminated beautifully in her latest melancholic LP, which marks a departure from her indie roots and an embrace of the hip-hop influences that now surround and inspire her.
