Cynthia Nixon Is Running for Governor of New York

Former Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon might just be New York’s first female and first LGBTQ governor.

Best known for her role as Miranda Hobbes, the hardworking lawyer of New York City’s most iconic girl gang, Nixon just officially announced her bid to end months of speculation over her intention to run. Much like her SATC character, the 52-year-old actress is a lifelong New Yorker who is intelligent, well-spoken, and politically informed.

Nixon, who is bisexual, has been married to her wife Christine Marinoni since 2012 and the two have each been advocates for public education, women’s rights, and LGBTQ rights for years now. Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed Nixon to the advisory board for the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City in 2014, while Marinoni has served as an advisor to the New York City Department of Education during the de Blasio administration.

While her greatest competition is the incumbent, Andrew Cuomo (D), who is currently serving his second term as NY governor, Nixon would make history if she defeats him in November.
