Ireland a Day Away from Vote Regarding Ban on Abortion

(Shuttershock)

A decision will be made regarding Ireland’s 8th amendment on Friday, May 25th, 2018.

As of now, women who need to terminate a pregnancy are not able to do so in their home country of Ireland due to the 8th Amendment of the Constitution of Ireland. The amendment claims an equal right to life for a pregnant mother and their unborn child. There are restrictions on the 8th Amendment, allowing abortion only if the pregnancy is life threatening to the mother.

If a woman is put in a situation where she is faced with having to choose whether she should have her child or not under difficult circumstances, she would have to add to the stress of her decision by needing to travel outside of the country to terminate her pregnancy. This could all change tomorrow, depending on what majority of voters choose.

It is difficult to say which way the vote will go, as there are a great deal of citizens campaigning for a repeal of the amendment, as well as a large number of citizens campaigning for Ireland’s abortion referendum to keep the 8th Amendment in place.
