Zooey Deschanel Promoting Reduction of Plastic to Help Marine Animals

(Instagram)

Zooey Deschanel has been speaking out more than ever regarding the impact plastic is having on the planet.

Deschanel recently assisted National Geographic in promoting plastic reduction by helping with their launch for Planet or Plastic, National Geographics’s effort to raise awareness about the incredible amount of plastic waste that ends up in our ocean.  In her post about the issue on Thursday, she explains how reducing the amount of plastic we use and throw away can help marine life, the ocean’s ecosystems, and the overall health of our planet.

Hey! I’m @zooeydeschanel and on behalf of @farmproject, I’ll be guest curating the @natgeo Instagram feed throughout the day to help launch #PlanetorPlastic—National Geographic’s multiyear effort to raise awareness about the global plastic waste that gets into the world’s oceans. Learn what you can do to reduce your own single-use plastics and take your pledge at natgeo.com/plasticpledge (link in bio). Doing so will not only benefit the thousands of marine animals that become entangled in or suffocated by plastics each year but will also contribute to the overall health of the planet’s marine ecosystems and all who rely upon them. Check the feed throughout the day to see more of the amazing pictures I’m posting.

Some ways we can help seemingly with our effort are by using a reusable water bottle, using your own bags for groceries rather than plastic bags, purchasing less plastic items, doing your part with recycling, and purchasing products that have been created with recycled materials.

Well known for her quirkiness, her latest post suggested using pasta straws rather than plastic straws.  They would be single use, just like plastic straws; however, pasta is biodegradable while plastic clearly is not.
