Reese Witherspoon Gives Girls a Chance to Learn Filmmaking

Reese Witherspoon’s company, Hello Sunshine, partners with AT&T and Fresh Films to give aspiring female filmmakers the chance to gain hands-on experience.

As a way to combat gender inequality in the film industry, AT&T, Hello Sunshine, and Fresh Films came together to create the AT&T Hello Sunshine Filmmaker Lab.

“I believe every young woman has a story to tell,” Witherspoon said in her Instagram announcement of the collaboration.

Although women have a story to tell, they make up only 17% of content creators in Hollywood.

To address this, the AT&T Hello Sunshine Filmmaker Lab will give 20 girls ages 13-18 the chance to develop skills in the film industry by creating a TV show.

The girls will spend July 30th to August 6th in Los Angeles rotating positions on their TV show to learn all aspects of filmmaking.

Through the program, the Oscar winner is hopeful that “it will provide young women with the tools to tell their own stories, and ultimately, start a chain reaction that leads to continued access and opportunity for them in our industry.”

The program is free, and girls of all levels of experience are welcome to apply.

According to the website, the application deadline is June 10th and includes creating a 90-second video answering the questions “why do you want to be part of this program and learn how to tell stories through filmmaking,” as well as, filling out the online application form with the two additional short essay questions.
