Thandie Newton Excluded From #TimesUp Movement

In an interview with News CorpWestworld actor Thandie Newton claims the Time’s Up movement excluded her. The Time’s Up Movement’s focus has been on shedding light on sexual harassment and misconduct in Hollywood but the members of the group haven’t been completely inclusive in choosing the women they choose to work with and support.

Newton reportedly told News Corp that she “wasn’t hot enough” to be included in Time’s Up.

“I wasn’t mainstream enough and I wasn’t going to be at the Oscars this year, even though I am having a renaissance in my career,” she stated.

It’s very odd that the group would exclude her when Newton is not only a very established actress but she has also always been outspoken about her #MeToo experiences when she alleged that an unnamed director sexually abused during an audition. Newton shared her “casting couch” story on CNN in 2013 which happened when she was only 18.

Newton stated that members of the Time’s Up movement dismissed her when she tried to contribute. She expressed that she was hurt that the movement ignored especially when she was ignored by Hollywood when she came forward with her story.

She told the outlet that sharing her #MeToo story was worth it stating,

“I felt if there was one girl whose family was thinking about putting their child into show business, that would help them decide,” she said. “That was all I cared about.”

The Time’s Up mission statement on the official website reads:

“Now, unlike ever before, our access to the media and to important decision makers has the potential of leading to real accountability and consequences. We want all survivors of sexual harassment, everywhere, to be heard, to be believed, and to know that accountability is possible.”

The Times Up movement has been under criticism for not acknowledging women of color. It is troubling that Newton was reportedly ignored, especially given how open she has been about her experience and the trouble she had being ostracized for coming forward.
