Mariah Carey Courageously Discusses Her Battle with Bipolar Disorder

(People Magazine)

On Wednesday, Mariah Carey revealed her struggle with bipolar disorder.

The superstar told People Magazine that she is finally seeking treatment after a couple years of hardship that included a reality show on E!, romantic drama, and years of professional upheaval. Carey explained to People, “Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me. It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love – writing songs and making music.”

Carey’s courageous decision to speak on her struggles with mental health will inspire others on doing the same. It takes a lot of strength to speak on your own personal struggles especially as one of the biggest singers of all time and the world knowing who you are. Mariah Carey also explained the reasoning behind her decision to open up about bipolar disorder.

“I’m just really in a good place right now, where I’m comfortable discussing my struggles with bipolar II disorder,” the mother of two beautiful 6-year old twins Monroe and Moroccan stated. “I’m hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone. It can be incredibly isolating. It does not have to define you and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me.”
