The honorable former First Lady was happily welcomed, and Ellen asks how life has been since she and former President Barack Obama left office. Mrs. Obama explained to Ellen that everyone is doing well and they are still living in D.C. right down the road from the White House because they want Sasha to graduate from the same school she’s been attending.

Michelle Obama also revealed what was in the Tiffany’s gift box that Melania Trump gave to her at the inauguration. Obama revealed that it was a “lovely frame.” Speaking of gifts, the Princeton and Harvard Law School alum gave Ellen some gifts for her birthday, which came from their favorite store CVS. The birthday gifts included boxed wine, Metamucil, a Barack Obama chia pet, and a set of pushup handles so that Ellen “don’t ever lose a pushup competition again,” referring to their pushup competition that they had back in 2012.

Ellen also expressed her concerns about the direction that America is going politically, and the admirable former First Lady gave some hopeful words that we can all live by, that we should never lose sight of who we are.

“We show empathy, we care for each other, you know, we do have a lot in common,” Michelle Obama stated. “That’s what it means to lead with hope and not fear. And that’s all we have is hope. So, I would just encourage your viewers, the country, to do the things we do every day. To love each other, to take care of each other, to show empathy – and you can’t do that only when people make you feel good or safe. We’ve got to do it all across the board. We have to be an open-hearted nation and that’s who we are. And that’s the truth of who we are. We can’t lose sight of that.”
