Shonda Rhimes, Gina Rodriguez + More Celebrate Female Filmmaker Friday

If there’s one thing we don’t celebrate enough, it’s female filmmakers.

Women directors took to Twitter on Friday to celebrate the accomplishments of women in film. Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal creator, Shonda Rhimes thanked the women directors that have contributed to her productions in Shondaland. SMILF director, Frankie Shaw showed her behind-the-scenes experience as a director and the deep care that goes into the series.

The hashtag comes on the heel of this year’s Oscar nominations, where Lady Bird director and writer, Greta Gerwig is the only female nominated for directing. As of 2018, Gerwig is also only the fifth women to be nominated in the director category.

Gina Rodriguez, who stars on Jane the Virgin, also participated in the discussion. Rodriguez recently made her directorial debut on her hit CW show, tweeted about the experience being “challenging and invigorating” as a woman of color. Ava DuVernay, the upcoming director of A Wrinkle In Time, tweeted about her various experiences on the projects she has directed.

Some men in the entertainment business, such as screenwriter Zack Stentz (ThorThe Flash), took the time to express their appreciation for female filmmakers on projects that often go unnoticed.

We greatly appreciate all of our female filmmakers and look forward to more in the future.
