Lupita Nyong’o is Publishing a Book

Her new children’s book Sulwe will be published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers next January.The Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyongo will be releasing her first book at the beginning of next year. Her children’story Sulwe will be tailored to children 5 – 7 years of age and will have an emphasis on black beauty.

In the tale of a 5-year-old girl from Kenya named Sulwe, which means “star” in Nyongo’s native language, she will bare the darkest skin color in her family, which makes her feel like an outsider. Dismantling the Eurocentric beauty standards, Nyongo is destined to bring a children’s book to life that allows one to see beauty differently.

In a lesson of self-love and acceptance, the Star Wars actress aims to have her story “serves as an inspiration for everyone to walk with joy in their own skin.”

I am pleased to reveal that I have written a children’s book! It’s called “Sulwe”! Sulwe is a dark skinned girl who goes on a starry-eyed adventure, and awakens with a reimagined sense of beauty. She encounters lessons that we learn as children and spend our lives unlearning. This is a story for little ones, but no matter the age I hope it serves as an inspiration for everyone to walk with joy in their own skin. Coming January 2019!!
