Matt Damon Apologizes for Comments Regarding #MeToo Movement
The actor has taken time to reflect on his past comments, and now wishes he had thought a little bit more before making them.
Matt Damon recently faced criticism for stating that, “We’re in this watershed moment, and it’s great, but I think one thing that’s not being talked about is there are a whole sh** load of guys -the preponderance of men I’ve worked with -who don’t do this kind of thing and whose lives aren’t going to be affected. If I have to sign a sexual-harassment thing, I don’t care, I’ll sign it. I would have signed it before. I don’t do that, and most of the people I know don’t do that.”
Actors including Debra Messing and Cher immediately fired back at Damon.
Matt Damon- SERIOUSLY? You are a smart man. A privileged, white man. This is NOT the time to ask for a pat on the back. How about we NOT celebrate men who are simply decent human beings. Stay on track, Matt. It’s not about you. https://t.co/mmdbqAUyP7

Matt Damon is the epitome of a faux ally whose performative wokeness is more about servicing his own ego than the needs of the oppressed & disenfranchised . https://t.co/KN2tF3AzGj

As a result of the backlash, Matt Damon has reconsidered his original statement. “I think ultimately,” he said Tuesday, January 16 on the Today show, “what it is for me is I don’t want to further anybody’s pain with anything that I do or say. So for that, I’m really sorry.”
Damon also revealed that he and Luciana Barroso, his wife, have begun a dialog with their daughters on consent and respect for themselves and others. Hopefully, others who originally shared similar views to Damon’s will also reconsider them.
