DuVernay was awarded the honor at the 2018 NAACP Image Awards, with singer Mary J. Blige presenting the award.

The 49th annual Image Award ceremony that was held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebrates the achievements of people of color in entertainment, literature, and those who promote social justice through creative endeavors.

When accepting the award, DuVernay quickly joked that she was “a director and shouldn’t be up here” and “is just a nerd with glasses.”

In the past year, DuVernay has continued work on her show, Queen Sugar and directed different projects that include the documentary, 13th, and Jay-Z’s music video, Family Feud, featuring Beyoncé. She is also the director of the upcoming film, A Wrinkle in Time.

In the spirit of the holiday, the director expressed her love and praise for fellow artists of color, like Shonda Rhimes and Jordan Peele. She speaks on A Wrinkle of Time as “[her] love letter…for family, community, and the best in our selves.”

DuVernay reminds us of Dr. King’s dream and that “we are the dream.”
