The term “Grumpy Cat” refers to a cat that went viral in the past years for holding a consistent grumpy pout on his face. He’s owned by Tabatha Bundesen, but his fame actually came from her brother, Bryan. He posted a photo of the cat on Reddit, and life for this 5-year-old feline has not been the same since.

Grumpy Cat Limited came into action- a company devoted to dishing out the kitty for his thousands of fans. In 2013, they signed a contract with Grenade Beverage allowing them to use the cat’s image on their products. However, Grumpy Cat Limited later ended up suing Grenade Beverage in 2015 for breaching their contract and using the images in places they hadn’t discussed.

The owners of Grenade Company later countersued, claiming that Grumpy Cat Limited did not adequately represent the brand in ways they’d discussed. Lawsuit upon lawsuit later, it finally ruled in favor of Grumpy Cat- in $710,000. If there’s anything to be learned here, definitely don’t mess with the cat.
