The film, starring Margot Robbie, follows the difficult life of figure skater Tonya Harding.

Harding’s claim to fame was when her ex-husband and bodyguard hired Shane Stant to hit teammate Nancy Kerrigan in the shin with a police baton, leaving her unable to perform at the Figure Skating Championships.

Tanya was ratted out by the pair though, being blamed for the incident, and ended up pleading guilty to hindering the prosecution of an attacker. She avoided jail time but had to pay a $160,000 fine and serve 500 community service hours.

Over 20 years later, Tanya’s story is being told on the big screen.

The synopsis of the film reads, “Tonya Harding rises through the ranks of competitive figure skating only to find disgrace when her husband tries to eliminate her rival.” This quick summary offers up a point of view that many people do not believe, as most think that Harding put her husband and bodyguard up to the sinister act.

Margot Robbie, who portrays the disgraced figure skater, went through a rigorous ice skating training program to get herself ready for the film. She told Rolling Stone, “”Every time my alarm would go off at like 5 a.m. I’d be like, ‘I can’t do it again today, I’m still so bruised from yesterday.'”

But in the end, it was all worth it for the star who was hoping to show the audience an unknown side to the one-time figure skater. “Everyone wanted to sum [her] up and put her into these neat little soundbites and splashy headlines… And we still do that today. But it’s just not that simple,” Robbie stated as she closed out the interview.
