Interview with Joelina Drews

Joelina Drews might not be a household name yet, but mark our words she will be soon. Her urban dance music will have you singing along and you’ll be dancing all night long.  Joelina Drews was destined to be a pop star as she has been involved in music her whole life. Her father is famous German artist Jurgen Drews and she started taking vocal and piano lessons at just six years old. Her upcoming full length album is set to release in April 2018. We asked Joelina about her music, how she was discovered, the best advice she was ever given, and her positive message to women. Read on to find out more about this talented musician.

GLITTER: How were you discovered?

JOELINA: I started singing at a very early age, as my dad is a musician as well. When I was 13, my dad was asked to be part of a tribute song for Michael Jackson and I begged him to sing on it. Finally he recorded a part with me which turned out to be my first vocal recording ever! End of this story is that the producer of this song became aware of me and wanted to work with me. Since then, I kept working on my own music and started writing for other artists as well.

GLITTER: How would you describe your sound?

JOELINA: I call it urban dance music as it’s a mixture of urban pop / R&B with future bass and dance elements.

GLITTER: What can you tell us about your new single, “Skybar?” What inspired you to write that song?

JOELINA: I wrote this song in the beginning of this year when I stayed in LA for some months. I went to the Skybar at Mondrian at the Sunset Strip nearly every weekend and had an amazing time with amazing people.

One time, when I went into my session the next day, I wanted to write about this good time I just had there, about living in the moment and totally devoting yourself to somebody that you really like, not thinking about tomorrow!

GLITTER: When can fans expect to see a full-length album out from you?

JOELINA: Soon we hope! I hope to release it in late spring or the beginning of summer 2018.

GLITTER: Is it true that your father is also a musician? Have you ever collaborated on any projects together?

JOELINA: Yes, he’s been in the music business for 50 years but we never collaborated on a project yet because he does a totally different style in German language.

But maybe one day… who knows what could happen…

GLITTER: Is there something about your fans would be surprised to know?

JOELINA: Well, my lyrics are autobiographical so every story that I’m singing about happened to me or to someone that I know. I want to be able to identify with my songs and that’s the only possible way for me to do so. So if you wanna get to know me better, make sure you precisely listen to my lyrics 😉

GLITTER: Is there someone you’d like to work with that you haven’t worked with already?

JOELINA: Oh yeah, there are some more people I really wanna work with! But the most exciting ones for me would be Poo Bear, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter. These songwriters are beasts in what they do and I really admire them and their music!

GLITTER: Best advice you were ever given?

JOELINA: Don’t wait and do but be patient!

GLITTER: What is your definition of self-love?

JOELINA: To be the best version of yourself and always try to improve in what you do and what you want to achieve. Never lose your goals and keep grinding!

GLITTER: What positive message do you hope to send women who hear your music?

JOELINA: That everybody has issues and nobody has a perfect life. You have to work with what’s been given to you and in the end there’s always something positive behind every story.

GLITTER: Many women are coming forward in media and standing up for their rights as women. How important is this issue to you?

JOELINA: Very important! I feel that women are still not treated on the same level as men, so I think it’s essential that those of us who have the power to move something stick together and try to communicate the importance of gender equality and other current topics.
