Russell Simmons Steps Down From All Companies After New Sexual Assault Claim

Jenny Lumet, the award-winning screenwriter of ‘Rachel Getting Married’ and ‘The Mummy,’ accused Russell Simmons of sexually violating her.

Lumet, the daughter of filmmaker Sidney Lumet, detailed her alleged assault to the Hollywood Reporter, claiming he sexually violated her in 1991 when she was 24.

She stated, “You didn’t punch me, drag me or verbally threaten me. You used your size to maneuver me, quickly, into the elevator. I said, “Wait. Wait.” I felt dread. I was very, very sad. I didn’t know if the driver was a further threat, or an ally. I was both relieved and terrified when he did not get into the elevator. Alone in the elevator, you pressed me into the corner with your body, your hands and your mouth.”

Lumet went on to describe in full detail the nature of their friendship, how he pursued her with flirty gifts and how she never asked to go to his apartment when he offered her a ride home from an event.

Lumet’s letter prompted Simmons to issue a statement that included, “While her memory of that evening is very different from mine, it is now clear to me that her feelings of fear and intimidation are real. While I have never been violent, I have been thoughtless and insensitive in some of my relationships over many decades, and I sincerely apologize.”

Simmon’s continued, “This is a time of great transition. The voices of the voiceless, those who have been hurt or shamed, deserve and need to be heard. As the corridors of power inevitably make way for a new generation, I don’t want to be a distraction, so I am removing myself from the businesses that I founded. The companies will now be run by a new and diverse generation of extraordinary executives who are moving the culture and consciousness forward. I will convert the studio for yogic science into a not-for-profit center of learning and healing. As for me, I will step aside and commit myself to continuing my personal growth, spiritual learning and above all to listening.”

Simmons was accused of sexual assault last month along with Brett Ratner, who has come under fire with over 30 sexual assault allegations. Ratner has since been removed from all projects.

Simmons also came under fire when he emailed actor Terry Crews regarding Crews bringing allegations against a Hollywood agent of which he stated, groped him in front of his wife. Crews was the first male celebrity to come forward with sexual harassment allegations since Weinstein allegations came out. He stated Simmons emailed him asking to give the agent a pass.
