It’s Been Ten Years Since the Amanda Knox Trials

Instagram

While many of us were pretty young ten years ago, we still remember the name, Amanda Knox.Knox was arrested back in 2007 after the gruesome murder of her roommate, British student Meredith Kercher. On November 2, 2007, Kercher’s body was found in her bedroom after Knox called the Italian authorities when she spotted blood in the bathroom, and Kercher’s bedroom door was locked.

The cause of death was from lacerations Kercher obtained. The Italian justice system found Rudy Guede guilty of Kercher’s murder a year later due to his prints being found on the victim’s body. He had supposedly gone out on a date with Kercher the night before her death. The court found him guilty of murder along with sexual assault and was sentenced to thirty years in prison.

Knox and her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were not out of the woods though. Believing they served a role in Meredith’s murder, the pair were put on trial beginning in January 2009. Though they both pleaded not guilty prosecution believed that the couple helped hold down Kercher as Guede assaulted her, along with hitting her head against her bedroom wall and stabbing her. Both Sollecito and Knox were found guilty in December that year and were sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Both appealed their sentences and were acquitted in 2011 as there was not enough evidence to prove their part in the murder. This ruling has been the final one of the case and has been upheld since it was questioned in 2015.

Knox returned back to her home state of Washington in 2011, and wrote a book on her experience titled “Waiting to be Heard.” On her Instagram page, she lists herself as a writer and appears to live a normal life.

The general public may never truly know what happened that November evening in Italy, or if Knox is truly innocent. We pray that Meredith’s family find comfort and peace on the anniversary of her death.
