Jennifer Hudson was born on the south side of Chicago in 1981 and blew the world away with her voice, on season three of American Idol, even though she was shockingly eliminated from the top seven. After leaving Idol. She appeared in the 2006 film Dreamgirls with Jamie Fox, Beyoncé, and Anika Noni Rose and won an Oscar for her performance. She was on top of the world when her world came crashing down.

In October of 2008, Hudson’s mother and brother were shot and killed in their Chicago home. Her nephew was missing from the house and was found three days later in a parked SUV and had also been shot. Her brother in law was arrested for the crimes and will serve the rest of his life in prison.

Hudson continued to work hard as she rocked the house as she sang the national anthem for the 2009 Super Bowl. Jennifer and her fiancé at the time, David Otunga also welcomed their first and only son, David Jr. She seemed to be rising out of the pain of the past.

Unfortunately, on November 16, 2017, a rep for Hudson told PEOPLE that she and David were splitting up.

“Jennifer Hudson and David Otunga have been in the process of ending their relationship for a number of months. Today, Jennifer requested and received a protective order against her ex-fiancé,” the rep said in the statement.

Hudson did this for the best interest of her son and asks that her privacy please be respected at this time. Stay strong J Hud.
