Greek Life Halted at University of Florida After Death of Pledge

Though hazing has proven itself deadly time and time again, Universities across the nation are still fighting this battle with their own Greek programs.Unfortunately, the foolish practice has taken another life too soon. Freshman Andrew Coffey, a Pi Kappa Phi pledge, was pronounced dead on Friday. While official autopsy results are still being awaited, alcohol was a confirmed factor in the civil engineering student’s death.

University President John Thrasher in an official statement said, “all of our student organizations — Greek organizations and the other recognized student organizations on campus — must step up. They will have to participate in the solution.”

In the meantime, the 28 fraternities and 26 sororities on the Florida campus have indefinitely been suspended.

Thrasher did not confirm if the incident was hazing related, and there was no mention of an ongoing investigation looking into Coffey’s sudden death. Hopefully, the autopsy will give further details to clear up the situation.

Coffey’s passing follows the gruesome death of Penn State student Timothy J. Piazza earlier this year. Members of his pledging fraternity were charged with involuntary manslaughter after Piazza died of a traumatic brain injury, and suffered from other internal bleeding after falling down a flight of stairs. His BAC was between .26- .36 that night, levels that are considered life threatening.

How many more college students will have to lose their life before Universities step up to the plate to end hazing altogether, along with irresponsible alcohol consumption at events sponsored by school associations?
