Film Critics Stood Up to Disney For Banning LA Times
The film critics’ boycott came after Disney banned The Los Angeles Times from future showings of their films after one of their critics wrote a piece Disney did not approve of.
Disney reinstated viewing rights to the publication on Tuesday, after critics and other publications alike voiced their anger with Disney for their irrational actions. Both The New York Times and A.V. Club announced that they would boycott all Disney showings until they restored the viewing rights of The Los Angeles Times.
The Television Critics Association spoke out against the actions taken as well, releasing in a statement, “we condemn any circumstance in which a company takes punitive action against journalists for doing their jobs.”
Other critics associations, such as the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the New York Film Critics Circle, the Boston Society of Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics were ready to disqualify Disney films from consideration for year- end awards. This would have been a huge blow to Disney, as the highly anticipated film A Wrinkle in Time, and the latest installment of the Star Wars franchise, are scheduled to hit theaters soon.
Disney released an official statement in regards to the incident, writing, “we’ve had productive discussions with the newly installed leadership at The Los Angeles Times regarding our specific concerns, and as a result, we’ve agreed to restore access to advance screenings for their film critics.”
We applaud the journalists and critics associations alike for standing up to the production powerhouse. If it were not for these collective actions, who knows if Disney would have reversed their decision.
