Mother Arrested for Refusing to Vaccinate her Son

After she was arrested, and against her wishes, the boy’s father had him vaccinated.Rebecca Bredow of Detroit, Michigan served five days in jail after refusing to follow a judge’s order to have her son vaccinated.

The court order came after Bredow’s ex-husband took her to court, saying that she had backed out on prior arrangements they had made to have the boy vaccinated. The judge gave her seven days back on September 27 to have the vaccinations administered, or she would be jailed.

When their child was born, the parents decided to delay on vaccinations, but still intended on having them done- just spaced out differently than recommended.

When the two separated back in 2008, custody arrangements had the boy’s father seeing the child every other weekend. After these recent events, the judge has adjusted the custody arrangement to 50/ 50.

What the mother did was not illegal, as in the state of Michigan a parent can delay vaccinations on the basis of “personal beliefs.” However, a child is required to have certain vaccinations before they can enter the public school system.

“I would rather sit behind bars standing up for what I believe in, than giving in to something I strongly don’t believe in,” Bredow has stated in regards to the heated battle. After hearing of her son’s vaccination, the mother’s lawyer said she was “devastated.”
