The Academy Has Expelled Harvey Weinstein

Arising from his recent sexual harassment and assault allegations, former movie producer Harvey Weinstein has been expelled from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Oscars Board has voted to expel the producer as he has become a very controversial member. The allegations continue to pile onto Weinstein as the board decides.

The Academy making their decision after the Board of Governors convened to have an emergency meeting over Weinstein, as he has been accused of multiple counts of rape by over 30 women, including Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Many women, and men, have raised their voices against the producer, including the likes of Tom Hanks, Whoopi Goldberg, and much more, the aforementioned names also on the Academy’s Board of Governors.

Many people, both on and off the Board of Governors, have called for the Academy to remove Weinstein from the Institution immediately. Among those voices is the brother and business partner of Weinstein, Bob, who strongly urged the Academy to expel his brother, even offered to write a note against his brother’s “sick and depraved” actions.

In the days following the New York Times and the New Yorker publications, exposing Weinstein’s actions, the producer has been been fired from the Weinstein Company, his wife has announced her plans to leave him, The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced revoking Weinstein’s membership, and the University of Southern California has rejected his endowment of $5 million.
