#WomenBoycottTwitter 10/13 in Protest of Women’s Voices Being Silenced

Hollywood was rocked with the news of dozens of actresses coming forward with assault and rape allegations against Harvey Weinstein. Names included Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie Scarlett Johansson and Cara Delevingne to name but a few.

After sharing her sexual assault story regarding Weinstein and tweeting to Ben Afleck about his knowledge of Weinstein’s behavior, Twitter suspended the account of Rose McGowan.Ben Afleck has since apologized for grobing a woman on air years back. Weinstein has since lost his job as well as his wife, she announced that she will be divorcing him.

Many came to her defense and asked how alt-right, KKK, abusers and stalkers are allowed to remain on twitter unsuspended.

This raises huge questions about how online abuse of women is rampant, and when women speak up on their abusers, they are silenced.

Using the hashtag #WomenBoycottTwitter, female Twitter users (along with many male ones) announced that they would stay off the platform tomorrow in solidarity with McGowan.
Many twitter users including celebrities have called for the inclusion of women of color who are victims to online twitter abuse, like Leslie Jones who has been verbally attacked on twitter as well as Jemele Hill who has been under verbal attack from Donald Trump on Twitter with no recourse.
Will you participate and stand up for women’s rights?
