Trump Challenges Broadcasting Licenses

Trump’s latest string of tweets included a lawless threat to take away NBC’s broadcasting license. The Federal Communications Commission, or FCC for short, is the group that deals with the licensure of broadcasting stations. The president does not have any say over who the FCC grants, or denies, licenses to. Unfortunately, someone failed to mention this to the President.

Trump took to Twitter to comment on a news story NBC ran about him increasing America’s nuclear arsenal , which he referred to as “pure fiction”. The conversation escalated when he questioned the broadcaster’s licensing.

If Trump is questioning the licensing of NBC, then he is also questioning the licenses of CBS and ABC since these are also broadcast stations. The only people that can challenge or voice their concern about a broadcast station is the people. In these cases, the complaints are usually in regards to obscene material shown by the channels, not because they believe the stations is airing “fake news.”

One has to question how Trump can call anything fake when he has been caught lying many times fine tuning the art of fabrication. He has even started his on facebook news station with D list artists like Joy Villa, known to hop the politcal fence and one who has also worn construction fencing as a dress to awards shows to garner attention. Sometimes it’s best to have good music to get attention rather than red carpet antics.

Trump’s comments would only apply to broadcasting stations though, as cable networks do not fall underneath the FCC’s jurisdiction.

After Trump’s comment, is it possible that the FCC will begin receiving letters from his supporters regarding the validity of broadcaster’s news stories? Will “fake news” ultimately become the new obscenity?
