Rebecca Black Opens up About Cyberbullying

In 2011, Rebecca Black hit the scene when her song “Friday” went viral. Black, now 20, has started to open up about the negativity that engulfed her at that time.

She wrote in an essay for NBC News’ Think, “The onslaught of negative attention I received was so sudden and so intense that I wasn’t sure I would survive.” Reminder, Black was only 13 at the time, like being 13 isn’t hard enough already. The middle schooler even had to leave her school in California to be homeschooled by her mother.

The video now has over 110 million views. Black says she went from normal girl to everyone knowing who she was. She became so overwhelmed that she shut down. Her friends weren’t there for her, she was being bullied by classmates, the comments on the video were extremely harsh, some people even threatened her life. While the music video did land her talk show and red carpet appearances, none of that was worth it to the now star.

Luckily, Black made it through those hard times and is now using her story to help others being cyberbullied.

“Internet bullying is not inevitable, if we allow ourselves to learn a bit more and stand up for others and what’s right,” she concluded in her previously mentioned essay.
