MUNA is Redefining the Girl Band

Considering Harry Styles has been promoting kindness and acceptance of all people on his namesake tour, it is no wonder he chose the girl group MUNA for his opening act.

Hailing from California, Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson met while they were attending the University of South California. The pop-rock group is not the girl group you may be used to listening to as a little kid, dancing around your room pretending the boy they were singing about was actually your crush.

Each girl identifies themselves as queer. This gender fluidity has traveled over into their work, as the group has made a point of using gender-neutral pronouns in their songs.

The girls have also gained a following of those from the LGBTQ community, writing songs like “I Know a Place” for them. The song goes, “You think being yourself means being unworthy/ And it’s hard to love with a heart that’s hurting.”

Throughout their songs, listeners can tell that the women believe everyone deserves a safe place where they are loved and their worth is acknowledged. While Styles’ tour has been sold out since May, you can check out MUNA’s site to see when they will be coming to a town near you.
