Kesha recently released her beautiful album, Rainbow.

While Kesha’s been very vocal about the incredibly rough road she’s taken to get to this moment, it turns out that her journey is even more heartbreaking than we knew.

She recently published an essay on Refinery29, discussing the realities of rehabilitation and mental health.

It turns out that the inception of Rainbow first came to mind when Kesha was rehabilitated for an eating disorder. During her stay, she was not allowed to use any kind of technology. She was only granted one hour a day of using the keyboard after begging persistently. The concept of her album, as well as her title song, Rainbow, started coming alive, as a result of that experience.

“I wanted to call the album Rainbow because after the storm, there’s a rainbow — and recently, I feel like I’ve gone through some things that have felt like a storm in my life. This was my way of telling myself that I was going to make it through. I made the decision to take the dollar sign out of my name. I did away with my cynical self-deprecating “I don’t give a fuck” attitude and the matching Twitter name @keshasuxx. I let myself be 100% genuine, vulnerable, and honest in my music. I used to be very mean to myself” she wrote in the essay.

While this is only a small part of the article, it’s a testament to how far Kesha has come. We love you so much, Kesha!
