One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson just opened up about what it was like to be part of one of the most popular boy bands, and your heart will hurt for him.

During an interview with The Guardian, Tomlinson spoke about how he was always the “forgettable” one while the rest of his bandmates seemed to have that one quality that defined their position in the popular group:

“The others have always been… Like Niall, for example. He’s the most lovely guy in the world. Happy-go-lucky Irish, no sense of arrogance. And he’s fearless. There are times I’ve thought: ‘I’d have a bit of that.’ Zayn, back in the day. He could relate to me on a nerves level. Liam always had a good stage presence, same as Harry, they’ve both got that ownership. Harry comes across very cool. Liam’s all about getting the crowd going, doing a bit of dancing…”

While no one can begin to understand what it was like to be catapulted into fame at the young age of 17, it’s saddening to hear that it took quite a while for Tomlinson to truly find his place in the group. The interview includes much more on how his X-Factor days really did a number on his confidence as a growing artist. Despite all this, however, it seems like Tomlinson has not given up on his musical career.
